HOMOPHOBE OF THE WEEK: George "Dubya" Bush
War in Iraq (and soon Iran), terrorist threats, 43 million without health care, national debt out the yang, immigration -- those all took a backseat today as Fearless Leader pandered to the religious, right-wing Christian whackjobs and supported an amendment to the Constitution to ban gay marriage. The Republicans are looking for anything to re-energize its party, and they all know the Christian right loves to bash the homos and this might get them out to polls for the midterm elections. The Republicans never met a wedge issue they didn't like, esp. when they know the House and Senate is slipping away from them. Dubya is a motherfucker...and so is anyone who supports him and his attempt to write discrimination into the Constitution.

I can't believe that ANYONE would support an amendment to the constitution to legalize bigotry. The same idiotic and myopic religious mindset was responsible for making mixed-race marriage illegal until the late sixties.

God help us all.

the biggest disappointment of all is that "anyone" in Carl's response happens to be "a lot" of people.

Let's keep in mind that "a lot" of people didn't believe African-Americans deserved any kinds of rights either...many still don't. This kind of hatred and bigotry will always exist...it's just making sure that a minority isn't oppressed. Adding language to the Constitution would be a backstep in this country's history. I hope the media is right and that there isn't enough support for this to pass.

Scary too to think that the states mostly banned mixed-race marraiges through the 50s and some held out until the 60s.

With a lot of the same arguments - "most people are against it," "it's unnatural," "it goes against tradition."
