In Memoriam: Robert Altman
One of the greatest film directors ever. Altman died last night at the age of 81. He will be missed, but what a legacy he leaves behind with such great movies like Short Cuts, Nashville, MASH, The Player, Gosford Park, Tanner 88, Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean and countless others. Even the ones critics called duds (like Kansas City and Pret-a-Porter) were better than most films. If you've never seen an Altman film, do yourself a favor this weekend and rent a few to see this genius at work.

Short Cuts is my absolute favorite Altman film. If you don't have the Criterion edition of the film on DVD, I highly recommend it. One of the most sumptuous DVD releases ever.

On a side note, I had the pleasure of meeting Annie Ross in London back in the 90s and she sang "To Hell With Love" and "Trout" from the film at her concert and everyone went wild. She said working with Altman was a dream.

Altman sooo stood up to the Bush Junta. and Yes, Short Cuts! Maybe Movies Worth Seeing has that criterion edition . . . also reminds me to re-visit Ray Carver, esp his poems

I'll be holding my own private vigil this weekend. He will be missed!

yes, a legendary director -- but... he shoulda quit before "a prairie home companion." maybe i'm crazy, but it was the worst movie i've seen this year. and even worse -- i can't listen to the radio show anymore!

By the way, Criterion's The Double Life of VĂ©ronique is worth the investment even if you have Artificial Eye's R2 version. The packaging is wonderful, and there's a booklet. Also, I'm impressed with Insdorf's commentary.

I'm keeping both versions. Kieslowski ranks with the best of the best.
