LOS ANGELES (AND MINI IDOL) UPDATE: Just a quick note to check in. I made it down to LA with no hassles and the reading at Redondo Beach was great! Good audience and I had a chance to have dinner with some poet friends including Cecilia Woloch, Elizabeth Innachi, Stephanie Prodromides and Carine Topal.

I watched a few of the American Idol performances on YouTube this morning and from what I can tell it looked a total train wreck of a show. Jordin was horrible, yet they lavished praise on her. Miami Sound Machine? Ick. Chris sounded like he was back to his nasal ways and should be in the bottom three tonight for what I thought was a pretty lackluster version of Santana's "Sway." Blake did a good vocal (and more terrible Justin-wannabe dance moves) on "I Need To Know" but he sorta reminded me of Phil Collins in the "Take Me Home" video. Not a good look, you smug bastard. Someone should have told poor Lakesha not to wear that dress (two words: back fat) and not to sing another tired Gloria Estefan song from the 80s. "Conga" was okay, but I'm just so over the song and Jennifer Lopez trying to teach Kiki rhythm was hilarious. And what about little Sanjaya's new short, permed do and facial hair? He sounded pretty good from what I can tell on "Besame Mucho." It might be his best performance ever. He's not going home again. Some of you better have voted for him.

I'm out in Redlands right now sitting at Sholeh Wolpe's dining room table in her beautiful house up in the hills. The reading at Poetry at the Loft is tonight. Can't wait! More tomorrow if I can manage it.

Sanjaya actually didn't suck, and a bunch of the other folks did -- so that means Sanjaya's going home this week. Just you watch.

I thought Chris was a total mess and couldn't believe how much praise the judges were giving him.

Jordin wasn't great, but she's so damn adorable even on an off night that I find myself rooting for her lately.

I have a feeling tonight is either going to be another "shock" elimination with maybe Chris going home or they will finally send the long-suffering Phily or Haley back to the barn.

Hi Collin, I've been meaning to drop by here and leave a comment. I usually see your name on Jenni Russell' s blog, but today it was on M. Shahin's blogroll. I know this says deadmule - I'm Poetry editor there - but I'm Helen Losse.
