The Vagina Speaks

Let's be frank: John McCain didn't pick a vice-presidential running-mate, he picked a pro-life vagina. Apparently, those were the only qualifications necessary for the job.

Sure, Sarah Palin's speech at the RNC last night was great political theater, but she didn't write it. That speech had all the sarcastic, snarky hallmarks of  the guy who wrote most of McCain and some of Bush's speeches. And while she regurgitated her "hockey mom" ethic, her experience and her outsider cred, she never once touched on an issue, such as the economy. The speech was all cleverly crafted to energize the base of evangelicals desperate for anyone who will sing their song.

The patronizing, sexist attempt by McCain to woo women voters with Palin is pathetic and she's apparently too stupid to realize it. If McCain had been serious about a female running-mate he would have picked Kay Bailey Hutchison, who's had a long, distinguished career in politics, and is a conservative...except that she's pro-choice. The Limbaugh and Hannity crowd and their Christian terrorist followers were never going to allow that. Instead, we get Palin, who pretends like she's in charge of the Alaska National Guard and that her proximity to Russia somehow makes her an expert on foreign affairs. Hell, she'd never left the country until a couple of years ago. The Associated Press took each of Palin's claims and debunked most of her speech with facts, something else sorely missing from last night's speech. Read it and learn.

So, McCain and Co. found a woman -- because it had to be a woman -- with little political experience, under investigation for ethics violations and who has even managed to politicize her underage daughter's pregnancy, not to mention forcing the teen father to show up at the convention. Pandering, foolish, inappropriate and unqualified. That's Palin. But she's on the ticket because her genitalia were right for the job.

So much for the 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling. They've been repaired and reinforced.

^ You missed the best part then, including the AP article which reveals all the lies in her speech.

" A pit bull in lipstick." That was actually funny.
Yeah, uh, it IS funny.Old joke, that. It actually began as a sexist joke wherein the first part is "What's the difference between a woman with PMS, and a pit-bull?" and it also ran, oh, ten years or so, ago, as "What's the difference between a female attorney, and a pit-bull?"
I can't imagine her snide comments will "win" people to vote for her. And now, the National Review is quoting The Enquirer
(before you roll your eyes, remember they got it FIRST--and were correct!) about John Edwards. She(Gov. Palin)apparently had an affair during her long marriage to her husband--with his then-business-partner(fishing business). Of course, she's sent word out, denying it.
But I wonder if it IS true, how the Republicans will handle an extra-marital affair, when it's one of their own, and the adulterer is a woman?
(For the record, I truly do not care at all who sleeps with who, but the rest of America appears to, so. I'm. Just. Saying.)

Lisa has a valid point, "I truly do not care at all who sleeps with who," unless, of course, someone plans to sleep with me. The i have lots of opinions. :-)

Something big is going to bite her in the ass very soon. It's either the ethics investigation or something else. You know the media and Dem operatives are digging for it right now. Dig faster!

Brilliant! I pray a scandal surfaces for Palin, it will help me sleep better knowing the election is secure.

It's unbelievable to me how the notion of "tolerance" in Republicans only applies to other Republicans. Their children can get knocked up underage and they're "making the right choice" when they keep the kid. But someone with no money gets knocked up and keeps the kid, and they're "a welfare mother milking the system." It makes me choke on my pretzel.
Love your "dig faster" comment, Coll. I LOL'd.
Great observation, Stacebro! I had not parsed that out.

But do you have to call her "The Vagina"? She's a WOMAN, regardless of party. As a feminist, I don't feel there's room in the conversation for that. I wouldn't take it aimed at Hillary and I don't think we should fire it at Palin. But then, I'm a poet who teaches Gender Studies, so I get riled up over gender-charged language.
Collin Kelley said…
Newzoopoet, yes, she is a woman...that's the point. McCain is using her gender and genitalia for votes, and Palin is either too stupid or so power hungry that she's allowed herself to be co-opted as a Hillary substitute.

Collin,
You apparently missed my point.

No duh that the whole thing has devolved into political bullshit gameplaying -- the Dems did it first when they dumped Hillary for the empty suit.

My point to you was that calling a woman -- any woman -- a vagina -- is demeaning.

Stacey,
Let's parse it further and with logic. Does the "welfare mother" you mention above accept government money for the children she keeps making and keeping? Does the "Republican" whose kid gets knocked up and keeps the kid become a burden to taxpayers?
If the answer is yes to both, your point is fair. I am an Independent, increasingly disgusted with both parties.

Lisa,
If Palin did have an extramarital affair, it should be treated the same as the news of Edwards' affair, don't you think?

BTW, I am all for the folks who sent that guy donations getting it back in a class action lawsuit. ;)

Newzoo, I think you're being overly PC for the sake of argument. There is nothing more demeaning than McCain singularly using a woman to pander and gain votes. Do you honestly think those old men actually gave a shit who Palin was when they picked her? They needed a woman to tow the party line, even if they know nothing about her. If Palin were such a "barracuda," she'd snap out of it and realize she's being used.

If you want to have a conversation about sexism and demeaning women, let's steer the conversation to the real culprit and not the vehicle for making a much needed point.
Collin Kelley said…
That's your opinion, but I don't agree. As long as you don't vote for McCain/Palin you can accuse me anything you like.
newzoopoet said…
I'm not accusing you, Collin. I'm simply stating a fact: it demeans a woman to call her "the vagina", just as inflammatory language like "fag" or the n-word demeans people. Language *means* something; I would think as a writer you'd know that.

And just to make sure I understand this new definition of "political correctness": If I don't agree with someone's party or policies, it's okay to use a slur against them?

Yeah, let me know how that works out for ya -- and whatever it is you support.
newzoopoet said…
Shit. I just realized I can't hate you. We both adore Kate Bush.
Collin Kelley said…
I don't consider it a "fact." Again, that's your opinion. As you can see, most of the commenters on this post have been women, and they don't seem to be taking it so personally. Most women I know have called Palin something far worse than a vagina (and I mean the "c" word) because they are savvy enough to realize McCain is being a sexist, patronizing pig.

Palin demeaned women the moment she allowed herself to be co-opted into this campaign. I have nothing but disdain for Palin, her views and her opinions. Like everything connected to McCain, they are dangerous and divisive. Palin is anti-woman, anti-choice, anti-gay and nothing by a Christian right mouthpiece added to the campaign to get the evangelical vote. She sickens me and makes my skin crawl.

If you're offended by this, you might want to avoid the blog for the next couple of months. I'm sure I'll post a few more things that will upset your sensibilities.
Collin Kelley said…
Yep, Kate Bush is my hero. See...we can agree on something. Wait...were you trying to hate me?
newzoopoet said…
Argh! You keep getting stuck on "my sensibilities". Forget about me; don't you see the hypocrisy and inconsistency of slurring your political enemy in this particular way? It does your position no good. It creates a wedge between you and the very thing you are trying to achieve: winning the hearts and minds of the voters Obama threw away when he dissed H.C.

But I get your hint, and I'll take a hike. Guess I'll go listen to "Lionheart" or something. ;)
Collin Kelley said…
Angela, you don't have to take a hike. I like a healthy debate. If I didn't want you to comment, I'd have deleted you ages ago. That's not how I roll. I just wanted to let you know that when it comes to politics, I get very impassioned and I do say things that many consider inflammatory. So, please don't stop posting.

I'm going to put on "Hounds of Love" right now. :)
newzoopoet said…
Really, Collin, you inflammatory? LOL

But seriously, I get insanely passionate about politics, too, and so I appreciate that you didn't "censor" my posts.

To Kate!
