WEEKEND, WORLD CUP, ETC. Italy won the World Cup this afternoon in penalty kicks against France. It really is criminal that the World Cup goes on for over a month, but I have to say I enjoyed most of it. Hopefully, England will get its shit together for 2010...and maybe Wayne Rooney will have mellowed.

While watching the World Cup, I began "packing" for the move to the new apartment. By packing, I mean clearing out old magazines and sorting through books and videotapes. I have a giant bag of movies on VHS that I'm carting off to the Book Nook this week. They usually don't give much in cash, so I'll probably trade for a couple of DVDs. I'm steadily working on getting rid of all my VHS tapes and getting everything on DVD, and I've been pricing a dual VCR/DVD recorder to transfer all my tv shows, home movies, etc. My VCR stopped recording about three or four years ago, so I've only been able to play movies. I've resisted getting TiVo or similar recorders because I'm afraid I will become a bigger couch potato than I already am, but damn it's tempting. Somehow over the last year, I had managed to buy enough magazines to fill two tall trash bags. We have recycling at the complex, so I drug them down to the bins. My humanity bit for the day.

After the World Cup, I was planning to go take a couple of photos for the newspaper, but of course it started raining. I managed to get over Decatur for that assignment before it started pouring, but then the batteries went dead. I had planned to stick around for Java Monkey Speaks, but I was pissy and hot and not in the mood. I'm writing poetry, but just not in the mood to read or hear anybody else at the moment. We had yet another shitty turnout for Poetry at Portfolio Center on Friday night, despite having the brilliant Laurel Snyder featuring. There were four of us, but she graciously read some of her new work, which was stunning...dark and full of pop culture references. We're taking a hiatus for August for Poetry at PC and plan to come back in September...hopefully with an audience.

Cleo Creech has done a lovely job on the Body Maps broadside for my reading for the National Black Arts Festival next Saturday. I corrected the proof and he's doing the final now. I hope to be able to sell them for a couple of bucks and then give the money back to NBAF. I've also been invited to read at Sycamore Place Gallery next Saturday night with Kodac Harrison for the opening of Charles Jupiter Hamilton's art exhibition. He created the Java Monkey Speaks Anthology Vol. 2 cover, so it will be exciting to see his other work.

How do you feel about a team winning (the World Cup even) on penalty kicks? I always feel like it's a let down. Those are the rules, but penalty kicks don't seem to be too different from regular play.

Hey Louise :)

I always find the penalty kicks phase pretty exciting, actually. It's a nail-biter. After a team scores so early in the first half and then plans through the second and overtime, it starts to get a bit boring. The teams are exhausted, the defense on both sides has figured out who's going to do what, so it all gets a bit mundane. At least with penalty kicks it ratchets up the tension. The exciting - and bizarre - thing yesterday was Zidane head-butting the Italian player and being sent off in the 110th meeting and ruining his final game as a player.

yeah, what did the italian player say to zidane that set him off? sadly, as brilliant a player as zidane was, he had a rep as an angry player. such temperment rarely goes away completely. which makes me think wayne rooney will do something retarded in 2010. once a thug...

sad ending for zidane, though.

The British press/tv news brought in lip readers to decipher what was said on the pitch. They are reporting that the Italian player Marco Materazzi called Zidane's mother a "terrorist whore" and that he should "go fuck himself." Zidane's parents are Algerian, and since the conflict between France and Algeria continues to bubble under the surface, this was very bad indeed.

I don't believe that verbal abuse is any excuse for resorting to "goonish" behaviour. Yes, it is sad that Zidane ended his career on such a sour note. However, the penalty kick that Zidane scored on in the seventh minute of the first half wasn't really a penalty to begin with as the italian defender never even touched the french attacker, while in the box. I think that most of the players on both teams deserve an academy award for their acting abitities when it came to taking dives and appearing for all intents and purposes mortally injured. A few minutes later they're up and running at full speed.

The Italians, however, I thought played a strong tournament.

I agree. Zidane should have held his temper and handled it off the pitch rather than the headbutt in front of millions. It will be the indelible and disappointing image associated with his career.

I'm with Zizou. I know violence is bad but I'd sooner he went out like that rather than pinching Materazzi or having a hissy-fit, or pretending to fall over clutching his face.
