WRITING NEW POETRY: Now that Wake is out in the world waiting for someone to love and publish it, I've been trying to work on new poems. This is always a rough period of adjustment. I've been living with the 50 or so poems in the manuscript for so long, that starting something new that has nothing to do with Wake has been a very mixed bag. I've been jotting down phrases and ideas in my notebook as well as just trying to type things directly onto my laptop. Here's a few scribbles from the notebook:

* The place where light meets dark is a ragged shadow on my floor...

* Blondie singing "Heart of Glass" on the Midnight Special (Anyone remember that show from the 70s?)

* ...reverse voodoo, un-conjure...

The last one is already in a poem that I'm not sure is working. It's more experimental than anything I've ever done. The one about Blondie is actually about my grandmother, who still loves that song. She's a hip grandma. I remember her dancing around the kitchen to it on the radio (which is also part of the poem). I just feel like I'm in a weird writing place right now. I've got ideas, but getting them to paper has been tough. Maybe I'm trying to hard. What I'm really looking forward to is my trip next week up to Chesapeake Bay to see my good friend Donna. Travel always gives me poems.

We shall see.

Oh yes, that leap into the void..exciting and scarey.

The Chesapeake? I sailed all through there in the late seventies. Gorgeous!

And maybe hearing Stevie sing "Landslide" will give you a poem too! :)

Hi Collin, You express where I am perfectly. Prayer In the Fog is finished, and I've searched out a couple of other places to submit it. At least you have phrases. I've thought a few but have no idea where I'm going, unless I turn my thesis into a book (not a new thought). But it's too hot to commit to something long. And yes, we're working on a vacation. Travel does produce poems. Hope your are great. Best, Helen

I *totally* remember the Midnight Special. Wolfman Jack was on it. I used to watch it religiously. I saw Fleetwood Mac on there, and Heart, and so much good stuff... I was probably watching when Blondie did "Heart of Glass." :) Formative years, man...
Yes to the Midnight Special.

My best with the ms.

Cool fragments that you posted. It'll come to you, the writing. I always stress when a week goes by and I haven't writen anything. I start feeling like it's all over. I get bitchy. I seek comfort in sweets. Then BAM. It happens. It'll happen, don't worry.
