A Great Day for California

The California Supreme Court has just struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage!

"There can be no doubt that extending the designation of marriage to same-sex couples, rather than denying it to all couples, is the equal protection remedy that is most consistent with our state's general legislative policy and preference," said the 120-page ruling.

Expect the Christian right-wing crazies to mount an appeal, but this country needs to wake up and smell the GLBTQ coffee. You can only relegate citizens in a "democracy" to second class citizenship status for so long before they rise up. A very exciting day.

This also means that marriages in CA will be recognized in NY, as NY recognizes gay marriages performed elsewhere.

And with any luck, a couple years down the road, people will realize that California has not been struck down dead for blasphemy, that in fact most people have just gone ahead about their lives, and maybe other states will realize that it won't kill them to jump on the bandwagon.

In 30 days it will be in effect, so Annie & I will be marrying AGAIN (we did it 4 years ago in the city when it was legal for a short window; there's a piece on my blog about it).

It's is going to be an insanely fun Pride in California this June!

oh, come on. why is this such great news? i mean, not that it's bad for human rights, but it's bad for writers! marital bliss = less misery = bad writing!

then again, i guess if you get trapped in a stifling marriage, a la emma bovary, you will have a lot to write about.

seriously, this makes me really, truly happy. i don't think there's any going back at this point.
