Atlanta Voting: In The Shadow of History


My precinct is at John Hope Elementary School, which is adjacent to the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site. I waited to vote until Election Day because I wanted to cast my ballot for Obama here.

The steeple of the new Ebenezer Baptist Church at the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site is visible from my place in line. I took this at 10:15 a.m. when I first got into line. I'd be standing there for the next 2 hours and 40 minutes.

There were only 10 voting booths, which was just nuts for the number of people wanting to vote.


The line snaked around the school at around 11:30 a.m.


Volunteers passed out water to those waiting in line.


Finally at the door to go into vote at about 12:30 p.m. If you haven't voted, get to the polls. If you are in line at 7 p.m. (or later in some states), they have to let you vote. Stay until your ballot is cast!

Only 10 booths? I voted at Meadowview Elementary (about 2 miles south of the E. Atlanta Village off Bouldercrest Rd., Precinct ML) and there were more than 20 booths, and at noon there was almost no one there (a dozen rather bored staffers and maybe 6-8 voters while I was there).

Yep, only 10 and very long lines. Some very poor planning from Fulton County's election department if you ask me.

i was forced to vote inside a very christian church using a fucking pen and paper ballot. what happened to the big time E-voting Ohio's been so proud of.

anywho, i waited for an hour. we had 3 booths but they were letting people sit at folding tables to fill out their ballots.

depsite it being southwestern ohio, most everyone around me in line were voting for Obama.

Turned in my absentee ballot here in Oakland Chinatown, where super fabulous Helen Zia (google her) was still campaigning against Prop. 8.

Oakland is Obama territory!

Yay, your vote is in! I voted last week, stood in line for over two hours, and froze.

In East Cobb there are no lines. I'm hoping that's a good sign. Maybe all the McCain supporters decided to stay home.

Wow, Coll, it defintely sounds like something is amiss...I'd send ane-mail off to Fulton County about that. We had about 15 or so booths, and not all were being used, either!

Interesting, Collin - there were only 11 booths at my polling place, which was a middle school. I live in a very diverse neighborhood- I find it interesting that many other places had so many booths. Does anyone know how the states decide which precincts receive what (and how many)?

The precincts are based on residential population density - which would be perfect for voting at 10pm at night - rather than "actual" density, ie. where people are (at work) during the day.

This is an artifact of the way the census is conducted, of course - the census doesn't locate people according to workplace.

Developing a secure way to vote online or via cellphone would fix all this, of course - I'd certainly want biometric verification for that, though.
