Submission call & other notes

Mike James is seeking poetry submissions for Unteachable: An Anthology of Poets Outside the Academy. For the last fifty years teaching has become the default profession of poets in the United States. This anthology is to present the work of poets who do not teach. It is for bankers, carpenters, lawyers, taxi drivers, machinists, clerks, waiters, flight attendants, surgeons, musicians and anyone else who reads, writes and publishes outside of the academy. Please submit 1-3 poems and a biographical statement to Mike James at williamdijames@aol.com. In the subject line, please type Anthology Submission. Poems may be on any subject and in any style. All submissions should be included in the body of the email, not as an attachment. Previously published are acceptable if the poet retains copyright. Payment will be one copy of the anthology. The deadline is Dec. 31.

Poetry at Tech here in Atlanta will launch its 2012-13 season on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. with a free reading by the brilliant Naomi Shihab Nye and Michael Dickman. The reading will be held in the Kress Auditorium of the Robert C. Williams Paper Museum, 500 10th Street.

The #poetparty Twitter chat hosted by me and Deborah Ager returns on Sunday, Oct. 7, 9 p.m. EST. We will have open discussion, so follow the hashtag and bring your links, questions and tips to share. And be sure to follow me on Twitter at @collinkelley.

I think that the anthology that Mike James is seeking to put together is a wonderful idea. Although I am part of the "academy" (well no, not really -- most people in the academy don't consider community college teachers part of the sacred club!)I think more attention needs to be paid to poets in all occupations.
