Someone sent an email saying it was 38 years, which is correct, but I was born in 1969 and I don't turn 38 for another three months. I'm hanging on to 37 for a bit longer. :)

I didn't realize it had been so long, until recently they did a VH1 "Behind the Music" special on the band. Their rise to stardom, the sold out concerts. Then the problems with drugs and alcohol, sleeping around with sock puppets and the addiction to fabric softeners. I understand after stints in rehab though the band is now planning a reunion/anniversary tour.
Hey! Thanks for this- my kids(19 and 23) and I sing it all the time but they've never seen the original-
I remember seeing it on the Johnny Carson show the first time- and I was (ahem) nineteen- or maybe younger- this is not the first time, I don't think- Jim Henson was a Carson favorite (along with Truman Capote, Tony Randall, and Carl Sagan)

Loved the post. The song will resonate nostalgically in my mind for some time, I'm sure.
